Dear Mr Guterres,
I was considerably surprised and sorry to hear that you are about to resign your position as Shipping Master at this Port, and I am sure that all Shipmasters who have anything to do with you in your capacity will agree with me, that for despatch and accuracy in paying off and shipping crews your equal will be hard to find. During the eleven years that I have known you, it has always been a pleasure to have you come on board my vessel to pay the crew off, as you could always do the work in half the time it takes in other ports. I only hope the man who succeeds you will give the same amount of satisfaction and be as obliging and conscientious as you have been. I hope I'll see you here on my return and wishing you all success and prosperity.
I am
Yours sincerely,
(Signed) A. D. Beker.
